We like to think we know someone, but in actuality, we only see the sides of people that they let us. People are so very complex. So many hidden desires, fears, secrets, passions, and guilty pleasures lie beneath the surface, just out of reach. No matter how open or vulnerable people like to say they are, they’re only as open and vulnerable as they want to be. We all have that same defense mechanism: the one that allows us to be in control of our feelings. The one that allows us to only reveal parts of ourselves that we want to reveal. The one that slyly hides any traces of real emotions and thoughts.
I suppose we do this because no one wants to get hurt. Yes, pain is unpleasant and at times, downright unbearable…however, I feel that it’s that pain that lets us know we can actually feel. People take family, friends, laughter, love, etc all for granted. It’s our right is it not? All these things we want and have. Then why is it that we only learn to appreciate our rights once we lose them. Why do we have to fight, hurt, and get hurt in order to realize this? A lot of the time, we have to lose what we have or want the most to finally appreciate it. Why though? Why do we have to lose something, hurt like hell, cry until there are no more tears, and beg God for a second chance before we can come to see the truth of our rights? I’ll tell you why. These things we want. These things we have. They are not our rights. They are privileges. The things we so desperately crave are in fact, blessings given to us, not rights we can abuse and exploit at a moment’s notice.
People do the things they do, say the things they say, and feel the way they feel because they truly believe that they deserve all the good things in life without having to actually work for them. Love, laughter, family, friends, etc. those are things everyone’s meant to have…right? Don’t ever forget though, that somewhere out there is a person who has none of the above. Ask that person whether the things we want and have are rights or privileges and you’ll get your answer. Don’t take things for granted. Be grateful for what and who is in your life. Above all, learn to appreciate what you have while you still have it. Don’t let that blasted defense mechanism get in the way and ruin all the good things in your life.
