“Born Confused” by Tanuja Desai Hidier is one of my all time favorite books. The book follows Dimple Lala through her culture identity crisis. She questions her friendships, her culture, her for her family, and most importantly, herself. She’s not Indian enough for the Indians, and not American enough for the Americans. In short, Dimple Lala is a bonafide ABCD. An American Born Confused Desi.
I am in love with every single character in this book. Zara, with her flamboyance and utterly captivating personality. Her ability to hold her head high and live her life on her own terms and not be ashamed. Kavita, for her poignant grace, and teaching me that it’s okay to move on and be happy. Karsh, for being every girl’s knight in shining armor. The character who makes my heart melt every time he calls Dimple Rani. Gwyn, for being what a real supertwin is like; a sister to fight with and love all at once. And Dimple Lala, For asking all the questions I couldn’t, and having the courage to find out all the answers.
This book is a must read. It makes me feel peaceful and complete inside. A million thank you’s to you Tanuja Desai Hidier for creating a masterpiece that touches my heart and soul every.single.time.
